With more than 4 million visitors a year, the Cathedral Notre-Dame of Strasbourg is the second cathedral the most visited by France after Notre-Dame-de-Paris and his(her, its) 12 million visitors, and well before those of Reims and Chartres.

For a very good reason: former(old) of several centuries, the first stones of which date 1015, and the current aspect of 1439, her(it) is the highest 2nd cathedral of France after Rouen, with her(its) 142m. She(It) also welcomes a magnificent astronomical clock.

The character is represented up under an arch and occupies almost all the space of the lancet. The head is taken on an aura a nimbus which symbolizes traditionally the holiness. On the arch above the head a registration reveals the identity of the character: +IOANNES-APOSTOLUS-ET-EWANGELISTA (Jean, apostle and evangelist). He is dressed in the classic art and concerns the Roman toga a tunic.
Of the left hand he blesses and the right he holds an unwound parchment scroll on which we can read the first verse of its Gospel: IN FIRSTLY ERAT VERBUM and VERBUM ERAT APUD DEUM and DEUS ERAT VERBUM (At first was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God) Jn. 1,1 Thanks to the technique of the stained-glass window, the light gets through the characters. Saint Jean also says

These windows were realized in series by corporations, of the Gothic time till the end of the Middle Ages, according to the construction of the Cathedral. They obey a program of set given by the clerks. A privileged situation even there, because, in most of the buildings, stained-glass windows having been offered one by one by leading figures, are generally ill-assorted.

Both stained-glass windows of Byzantine style

The oldest Romanic stained-glass windows are situated on both sides by the choir of the Cathedral. Both stained-glass windows of the left transept the North are of Byzantine style. One of them represents both saints Jean. We notice that these characters are flat and without expression. Over the saints, the Virgin is represented in prayer, this is a very rare theme.

La rosace de la Cathédrale de Strasbourg

A rosette is before anything else a symmetric geometrical figure having more or less the shape of a rose or a star.

She(It) is built in a circle from a central point and trained(formed) by curves.

This shape calling on(appealing) to the mathematics is present in architecture, in decoration, in sewing, joinery(joiner's workshop), etc. …

The rosette is used in many religions for centuries.

We find in the Christian buildings, but also in the mosques there or in representation in the mandala Indian.
